Celebrating the 20th Annual National Global Youth Service, the events lasted the entire month of April. This past month, Kids Who Care Foundation was a part of this national event where millions of people from across the country volunteered their time and services to help make a difference.
Cal State Fullerton Titans baseball teamed up with the Kids Who Care Foundation. At this Saturday’s game, fans were introduced to the foundation. Risha was asked to throw the first ceremonial pitch that aimed to put smiles on children all over the nation who suffer from chronic illnesses. Attendees were asked to make cards for the children of KWCF, donate, and volunteer. 5Star Public Relations, CSUF students organized this event and also gave four presentations to students at Katella High School in Anaheim to make cards for KWCF on an ongoing basis.
This past weekend (April 25-27) in honor of National Global Youth Service Day, KWCF had booths set up at the OC Youth Expo in Costa Mesa to get the word out, as well as make some “cheer up” cards for the bi-yearly Card Quilt Making Event. KWCF also held a card making event sponsored by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Children’s Ministry in Irvine, where local volunteers came to help make cards and card quilts. At this event, KWCF had Jacqueline Guzzetta, a local Irvine resident, as a guest speaker who shared her story of her son who became paralyzed from a mis-placed epidural during his heart surgery and the difference the “cheer up” cards made in the hospital in Virginia, away from home, friends and family. She gave a talk on how important it is to bring a smile to a child in the hospital and to be a friend to a child that has chronic medical conditions but may or may not look disabled.
For this National Global Youth Service month, over 500 volunteers, made up of elementary, middle, high school, CSUF, and UCI-Alpha Phi Omega students, as well as parents and other adults who came with their children helped make these events possible. Alpha Phi Omega, even collected donations for shpping costs of all the cards quilts and for Smile Pack kits (books). All hand-made with love and care, the volunteers all made cards using jokes and special messages to encourage hospitalized children to keep fighting and never stop smiling. Throughout the school year eleven year old Risha along with her younger sister Rhea, gives presentations to schools and various other organizations to help make a difference by a simple gesture of making cards. KWCF Uni High School and college clubs, UCI and CSUF, YAT, Saddleback schools, Vista Verde and other students including Tiny Tots 4 year old kids, scouts, after school programs such as Deeefield park, and religious organizations have helped in bringing smiles as far away as England. Whether it’s personal or general, the cards made from these events were made with consideration and a lot of thought. Though it was hectic and the kids were busy as bees, the Card Quilt Making event was a success with about 40 card quilts (25 cards per quilt) made and a grand total of about 1000 cards made! Thanks to these volunteers, these quilts will be sent out by the end of the month to children not only in the local southern California hospitals such as CHLA and UCI,but also to Ronald McDonald House in Minnesota, the Mayo Clinic RMH in Rochester, St. Jude's Hospital in TN and some other children in New Jersey, Massachusetts, MN, and Ohio.

A card quilt sent to Hamburg, Germany to Aneri who is 7yrs old, “…is suffering from A-L-L since she was 5 yrs. old. She had undergone two Chemo therapy cycles in India for last two years without any success. She moved to Hamburg Germany with her parents this February for BMT scheduled for March 1st. Upon arrival in Hamburg, doctors discovered that she has second relapse, and will have to wait for remission before BMT is even considered. She is currently undergoing third Chemo cycle in Hamburg. Her chances of successful remission are 30% or less according to her medical team in Hamburg”. We hope that the card quilt cheers Aneri up and we will pray for her speedy recovery! Aneri, the yoga CD is on its way for you! Keep smiling and you will be flying soon!

For Teachers/Principals:
It is our ongoing quest to educate and promote awareness about our program and we've found there's no better place than our own local community schools where kids can help other kids! Together, it is very rewarding as the children learn and join in the making of another child happy... or -- bring 'that' Smile when they most need it!If you would like to offer our program to your students, please download a copy of our Information Sheet & Release Form for each student and parent/guardian to sign prior to the start of each program. Thank you, in advance...we know that it all starts with 'you'!
